In a small village lived a boy named Arjun, whose mind was filled with big dreams. He wished to attain wealth, success, and fame in life. One day, he met a wise elder of the village and requested, “Please bless me so that I may achieve everything in life.” The elder smiled gently, placed his hand on Arjun’s head, and uttered just two words, “Ojasvi Bhava.”
At that moment, Arjun felt a little disappointed. He had expected a blessing related to wealth, success, or fame. But as days passed, a subtle transformation began within him. His body became more energetic, his mind settled into peace, and his thoughts gained clarity. His decisions became firm, and his very presence began to inspire others. Whatever he undertook started to flow naturally with balance and success.
Then he realized that the blessing “Ojasvi Bhava” given by the elder was the source of everything he truly needed. Because when a person is filled with Ojas, the body, mind, and soul become enriched, and life naturally moves toward excellence.
This is the essence of the important Ayurvedic principle called “Ojas.” Understanding and nurturing Ojas, the source of holistic health, immunity, and inner radiance, is the true path to well-being. In the following, let us explore the nature of Ojas, its importance, and ways to preserve it.

What is Ojas?
According to Ayurveda, the food we consume is gradually transformed into seven tissues (dhatus): Rasa (nutritive fluid), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle), Meda (fat), Asthi (bone), Majja (marrow), and Shukra (reproductive tissue). After proper nourishment of these tissues, the final subtle essence that is produced is called Ojas. It provides vital energy to every part of the body. Residing in the heart, Ojas regulates the entire functioning of the body.
What is the importance of Ojas?
In Ayurveda, Ojas is referred to as “Bala” (strength). But this strength is not merely physical; it includes mental and spiritual strength as well. Ojas is the fundamental principle that determines a person’s health, vitality, stability, and inner contentment.
When Ojas is abundant, every tissue in the body is well-nourished. As a result, the body gains the ability to resist diseases. That is why Ojas is considered the foundation of immunity. Its influence on the mind is equally significant. When Ojas is balanced, the mind remains calm, thoughts become clear, and decisions are made appropriately.
For this reason, Ojas can be considered the source of inner radiance in a person. The natural charm seen in some individuals, the impact of their speech, and the calmness in their presence are all reflections of strong Ojas. When Ojas is abundant, a person is becomes a source of positive energy for others.
We often neglect this fundamental principle. Excessive work pressure, improper diet, consumption of processed foods, lack of sleep, and constant mental stress gradually diminish Ojas. Especially, staying awake at night and excessive use of devices disturb the body’s natural rhythms, leading to a decline in Ojas. As a result, immunity weakens, and even uncommon diseases can appear easily. Weakness, fatigue, mental restlessness, and lack of interest are signs of reduced Ojas. If this condition continues, the body’s tissues weaken and may lead to serious illnesses.
Types of Ojas
According to Ayurveda, Ojas is of two types:
1. Paraa Ojas
Paraa Ojas is the most vital. It is the fundamental basis of life, and life itself depends on it. It is described as existing in a quantity of eight drops and resides in the heart. Damage to it can be life-threatening.
2. Aparaa Ojas
Aparaa Ojas plays a key role in maintaining health. It is said to be present in a quantity of half an anjali (a measure) and circulates throughout the body. Immunity and physical strength depend on it.
Qualities of Ojas
Ojas is described with ten main qualities:
- Guru – provides stability to the body
- Sheeta – maintains coolness
- Mridu – gives softness
- Shlakshna – provides smoothness
- Bahala – dense
- Madhura – nourishing quality
- Sthira – maintains steadiness
- Prasanna – mental clarity and calmness
- Picchila – protective coating
- Snigdha – unctuous nourishment
Causes of Ojas depletion
Emotions like anger, worry, fear, and grief weaken Ojas.
- Excessive exercise and overexertion
- Prolonged fasting
- Inadequate food intake
- Improper combinations of clean and unclean foods
- Excessive processed and stored foods
- Alcohol consumption
- Staying awake at night
- Injuries and blood loss
- Excessive detoxification of the body
- Consumption of toxins
- Microbial infections
Symptoms of Ojas depletion
In Ayurveda, the decline of Ojas does not occur suddenly; it develops gradually in stages:
1. First stage: Ojo Visramsa
Subtle imbalances appear in the body:
- Joint pain and weakness
- Fatigue and body weakness
- Imbalance of doshas
- Disruption of normal bodily functions
2. Second stage: Ojo Vyapat
Symptoms become more evident:
- Stiffness and heaviness in the body
- Swelling due to aggravated Vata
- Change in skin complexion
- Fatigue and lack of enthusiasm
- Drowsiness and improper sensory function
- Excessive sleep
3. Third stage: Ojo Kshaya
A severe stage that can be life-threatening:
- Fainting
- Loss of muscle mass
- Confusion
- Incoherent speech
- Death
Thus, Ojas depletion progresses gradually. Therefore, it is important to recognize early signs and make changes in lifestyle and diet. Protecting Ojas means protecting health.
When Ojas is increased:
When Ojas is abundant, the mind experiences joy and satisfaction. The body becomes well-nourished and strong. Enthusiasm and immunity increase.
Ways to enhance Ojas
Increasing Ojas is not achieved through a single medicine or method. It is a process that involves harmony between diet, lifestyle, and mental state. Ayurveda explains this through three key aspects: Aahara (diet), Vihara (lifestyle), and Vichara (thoughts).
Diet
Proper diet is the foundation of Ojas. Consuming nourishing, sattvic, and easily digestible foods is essential:
- Milk, ghee, butter
- Almonds, raisins, dates, figs
- Fresh fruits
- Fresh and sattvic foods
- Eating in proper quantity and at the right time
To avoid:
Excessively dry, spicy, hot, cold, stale, reheated foods, and incompatible food combinations
Lifestyle (Vihara)
Daily habits greatly influence Ojas:
- Adequate and deep sleep
- Regular routine
- Moderate exercise
- Practice of yoga and pranayama
- Oil massage (Abhyanga)
- Staying connected with nature
To avoid:
Late nights, excessive physical exertion, over-exercising, irregular lifestyle
Thoughts (Vichara)
The state of mind has a subtle yet powerful effect on Ojas:
- Positive thinking
- Calm mental attitude
- Meditation and self-reflection
- Gratitude and contentment
- Good company
To avoid:
Anger, fear, worry, jealousy, grief, and other negative emotions
Final thoughts
Diet nourishes the body, lifestyle maintains balance, and thoughts purify the mind. When all three align, Ojas naturally increases. Therefore, small but meaningful changes in daily life are essential to enhance Ojas. This is the path to a healthy, prosperous, and excellent life.
Friends, Ojas is the fundamental energy that nourishes and vitalizes all living beings. Life itself is impossible without Ojas. It is the subtle principle behind existence, stability, and growth. From the very beginning of embryonic formation, Ojas begins its role, acting as a nourishing fluid for the developing fetus. It then enters the heart and becomes the basis of life activities. Thus, Ojas holds a vital place from the very start of life.
Loss of Ojas means loss of vital energy. That is why Ayurveda considers Ojas the foundation of life. Residing in the heart, it continuously nourishes all bodily functions and sustains life.
Ojas is the essence of all bodily tissues. When all tissues – from Rasa to Shukra – are properly nourished, Ojas emerges as their final subtle form. It represents complete nourishment of the body.
Vitality, radiance, enthusiasm, and inspiration seen in the body are all expressions of Ojas.
Ojas circulates through ten channels connected to the heart, reaching different parts of the body. These channels serve as pathways for its flow. Therefore, the proper functioning of the heart and these channels is crucial for sustaining life.
In summary, Ojas is the essence of life, the source of nourishment, and the foundation of vitality. Preserving it is the key to a healthy and balanced life.
The blessing “Ojasvi Bhava” is a principle that guides one toward the completeness of life.
