Do you think seat-belts keep you safe? If yes, this article is for you.
You clearly value your life. You think that your life is worth saving. But, you also want to live long to enjoy all the wonderful things in life. You tend to keep your car running smoothly so that you don’t cause an accident to yourself and others.
But have you ever stopped and wondered, what else prevents you from having that long wonderful life that you are trying to save by wearing that seat-belt or by servicing your car? What are the metaphorical seatbelts of the car of your life? What accidents are you trying to avoid? Obviously, the car is built for moving and life for living. Just getting it serviced and keeping it in the garage is not the point.
Equally important is another question. What is the definition of getting your car checked? Is it just making sure it is well-oiled, or do you maintain it such that it requires less maintenance?
This train of thoughts came to me when I was sorting out an accident in my son’s highway game. It is a very tricky situation, you see. He maintained his double-decker car all too well and wasn’t expecting to cause an accident. “I don’t even throw them any more, Amma.” Yes, that statement has been true since last Monday.

These days, self-care involves one of three things: a visit to the doctor, a vacation break or a pampering session at a spa. Practically, all our medical insurance comes with a yearly health checkup. After some blood work, tests and some medicines from a multi-specialty hospital, we momentarily feel that we are all set. But are you able to drown the uneasiness and the fogginess even after the meds, the vacation or the hair-do? I could not. I felt unsettled when I was tuned out of life and tuned into just the instrument readings and momentary distractions. The symbolical mole on my hand was visible, but my eyes were shut tight. I refused to see the obvious. This car, that is our body, needs a better seatbelt.
